Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects (CHIP)

Main content start

Welcome to the Clubhouse!

The Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects is a new facility supporting student clubs focused on physical design, engineering, and the arts. The Clubhouse offers workbenches, fabrication tools, event space, meeting space and new opportunities for cross-club collaboration. Clubs can apply directly to become members of the space and have dedicated workspace and storage within the facility, as well as contribute to the culture of safety, inclusivity, interconnection and technical innovation. The Clubhouse Team will be here to support student clubs with training on our machines and equipment, project guidance and leadership development.

The facility is located at 473 Oak Rd.

How To Access

Club leadership must apply to CHIP for workspace, storage space and access to the tools. Individual members of those clubs can then take these steps to gain access to the facility.

  1. Complete the following safety trainings on STARS:
    • EHS-4200: General Safety, Injury Prevention (IIPP), and Emergency Preparedness
    • EHS-2800: Electrical Safety
    • EHS-1900: Chemical Safety for Laboratories
  2. Join the Slack (see FAQs section)
  3. Upload EHS completion certificates here
  4. Attend an in-person 25 minute safety orientation at the Clubhouse (this can be done before completing STARS trainings)
    • Safety orientations occur on an ad-hoc basis, come by during open hours and see a CA on duty or staff member to complete!

Equipment-Specific Training

Submit an Event or Reserve Conference Room

For one-time events or recurring meetings at the Clubhouse, use the Event Request form.

For any recurring meetings that occur on a weekday between 6pm-9pm, each club is allotted 2 guaranteed hours in the conference room. Outside of those hours, reservations are given on a first-come first-serve basis.

Club Application

This application should be filled out by club leadership. Please only submit one application per club.

If filling out an application after Fall 2025, please send an email to clubhouse@stanford.edu letting us know you have submitted an application.

All clubs are asked to renew membership each year and should use the same link to renew.

Creating a Clubhouse SOP

If your club is planning to do testing, bring in new equipment, or try out a new manufacturing process, we want to talk early.

Start by reaching out to us at clubhouse@stanford.edu or by sending a Slack DM to JD and Isabella with a brief description of what you’re hoping to do at CHIP. We’ll schedule a short introductory meeting to ask a few questions and share initial guidance on what we’ll be looking for in your SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).

After that, your club will be asked to write an SOP using the template linked below. Please:

Approval timelines depend heavily on the complexity and potential hazard level of the procedure, so please also include when you’re hoping to carry out the activity.

Approved SOP Library

Before starting a new process, review the approved SOPs here. If your intended work is covered, meet with a staff member to go through the SOP and get signed off to perform that process.

Clubhouse FAQ's

https://chip-clubhouse.slack.com

  • Our slack is hosted by the Stanford Enterprise system, so make sure you are logged in with your SUNet.
  • If clicking the link above doesn't work, you can manually search for our workspace and join that way by going to https://stanford.enterprise.slack.com/signin/find-workspaces and then searching "CHIP (Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects)"
  • If you are already logged in to another Stanford Slack workspace, you can click the name of the Slack workspace on the top left and from the drop-down menu choose, “Add Workspaces” and then “Find more Stanford University Workspaces” and then search for “CHIP (Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects”.
  • If you are still having a hard time accessing slack this way, send an email to clubhouse@stanford.edu and we will manually add you.

We’d love for you to visit the Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects (CHIP)! Before you visit, please take a moment to review a few simple guidelines to help keep everyone safe.

Who’s considered a visitor:

  • Club members who haven’t yet completed safety training
  • Stanford students interested in exploring the space or joining a club
  • Stanford faculty, staff, or other non-student affiliates
  • External to Stanford guests attending a club event (alumni, recruiters, etc)

While you’re here:

  • Visitors are welcome to look around, observe projects, and connect with club members, but can’t use tools, equipment, or contribute directly to an active project.
  • All visitors should have a host, which can be any lab user fully authorized to use the space (has done the safety orientation and turned in all STARS trainings). Please stay with your CHIP-authorized host—they’ll help you navigate the space safely.
  • Non-student visitors should sign in when they arrive and remain with their host during their visit.
  • The kitchen area is available if you need a comfortable place to wait without your host.

Private vehicles are not permitted to be parked on premises except for the purposes of loading/unloading while the driver is on the premises. Exceptions can be made for visitors if arranged in advance with the CHIP Team.

Parking along the street is often open and free after 4pm M-F and completely open on weekends, so feel free to make use of those spots! In general, we encourage folks to use your bikes or scooters and lock them up outside at the bike racks. We ask that folks not bring scooters or bikes inside the building.

We are located at 473 Oak Rd, Stanford, CA 94305
